Safe America Prepared

April is Earthquake Preparedness Month

Did you know that April is Earthquake Preparedness Month? Take some time today to become aware of the dangers and prepare to deal with earthquakes in advance.

Build a Kit Beforehand

Be sure to pack a minimum of 3 days worth of materials your family can use following an emergency. This kit should be packed in an easy-to-carry container, and do tell all members of the family where it is located so it can be easily accessible when needed. Make sure to keep track of all of the expiration dates for both food and batteries, and make sure that the water supply is changed every six months. Your kit should include the following:  portable water, non-perishable food, medical and sanitation supplies, flashlight with extra batteries and a battery-operated radio.

During an Earthquake

If you’re inside: Take cover under a sturdy desk, table, or along an inside wall. Stay away from glass or any heavy object.
If you’re outside: Remain outside and stay clear of any trees, buildings or utility wires. Stay away from doorway entries, because a lot of injuries are caused by debris falling from buildings. Once in the open, remain there until the shaking stops.
If you’re driving: Pull over on the side of the road as quickly and as safely as possible. Avoid pulling over near bridges, over/under passes and utility poles. Set the emergency brake and remain in the car until the shaking stops.
If you’re in a public place: Remain calm and do not panic! Don’t rush for the exits while the earthquake is occurring. Protect your head under any seats. Once the shaking stops, exit the building.

Remember, the most effective way to increase survival following a disaster is to prepare beforehand. For more information on family kits, visit Safe America’s toolkits online.
