Tornado Season Begins with a ‘Rush’ of Storms
This past weekend, at least 10 tornadoes struck northwest Iowa – reminding Midwesterners that tornado season is in full swing! The strongest tornado to hit – in the town of Mapleton, Iowa – was seen to be at least three quarters of a mile wide with winds of up to 136 miles per hour. National Public Radio said that while there were no casualties, the tornado did destroy half of the 1,200 person town!
In the United States, tornado season will be peaking during May/June time period, ending towards July. However, with the right weather conditions, tornadoes are like any other natural disaster and occur at any time.
Safe America reminds families to be ‘prepared, not scared™’ for dealing with tornadoes by following some simple guidelines:
· Stay informed: Pay attention to local weather reports
· Develop a Family Preparedness Kit
· Decide on a safe haven if you’re at home, school, work or in a car when there is a tornado warning
· Prepare an emergency supply kit
The Weather Channel also offers great advice on what to do if you find yourself in the middle of a tornado. For more information on developing a family preparedness kit, visit Safe America’s Family Tool Kit online.
