“March to 1 Million” Summit Successfully Launched

The March to 1 Million program – an extension of the successful 9/11 Drill Down for Safety program – will focus over the next 8 months on mobilizing one million citizens in emergency readiness exercises in 2011. The campaign’s overall goal is to make sure that both individuals and businesses know what to do in the event of an emergency. Last year, nearly 800,000 people participated in Safe America’s ‘Drill Down for Safety’ campaign during National Preparedness Month. Add a comment

Safe America Launches 'March to 1 Million'

Plans Briefing at USA TODAY Headquarters on December 1

The Safe America Foundation will hold a briefing on December 1 at USA TODAY’s Headquarters to review results from its 2010 ‘Drill Down for Safety’ project that mobilized nearly 800,000 people in 343 states. At the one-day task force meeting, Safe America leaders will honor the ‘Top 10’ organizations who drilled during 2010 and outline plans to mobilize 1 million people in 2011 to be involved in disaster training programs leading up to the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

Pagano noted that Safe America will be partnering with Motorola, UPS and the University of Missouri in creating new ‘readiness programs.’ This will include:

-          A Smartphone educational program, designed to teach people what they can do in an emergency to text and stay in touch with family members
-          A national ‘texting drill,’ to be spearheaded by the University of Missouri’s Fire Safety Institute
-          A youth program, designed to engage elementary and middle school youth, through 4-H, Boys and Girls Scouts and other youth organizations

Another feature of the program will be Safe America’s recruitment of First Ladies/Spouses in all 50 states to lead local state educational efforts. The program – spearheaded in 2010 by West Virginia First Lady Gayle Manchin and her husband, Governor Joe Manchin – reached 40 states and had the active involvement of Governors and First Spouses in Kentucky, New Jersey, Puerto Rico, Washington state, West Virginia, Iowa, Arizona, Arkansas, Indiana, Utah and Tennessee.
